I didn’t just run away to the neighbor’s house or to the next state. I ran to Europe, the Middle East and even North Africa. I did it all without a cent to my name. I was 16. Although such a trip might sound incredible to some of you, most of the time it was anything but. I went hungry for days. Slept under countless cold down pours. I fell victim to various vicious drugs. I spent weeks in solitude not talking to or seeing a single soul. Ultimately, I suffered. But through my suffering I grew. I was forced to comprehend those truths of travel, and also of life. I became grateful for my privileged upbringing. I began to see everyone as siblings, connected beings. In the end, I realized the power of travel as a medium for change, growth and happiness. In the past decade I have visited over 80 countries around the world. During this time, travel enabled me to thrive. I transformed from a beatnik backpacker able to survive on the smallest of budgets into an online entrepreneur purposefully creating the life I wanted to live. I started Runaway Tours to share my favorite places and experiences. These tours of Central America represent the culmination of all my travel experience over the past 10 years in over 80 countries. They are designed minimize costs while maximizing comfort and adventure. They’re about gaining new perspectives, discovering new life paths, forming relationships with likeminded travelers and taking time to soak it all in. To be honest, I never wanted to travel Central America. I envisioned, based on media reports, that I would probably be spending most of my time running from gangs while holding in burrito induced diarrhea under 105 degree heat. But shortly after my first trip to El Salvador back in 2013, I fell in love. I have since traveled throughout the region over the course of 4 separate trips. Hello Guatemala crew. First off, I’m am so so thrilled to join you all on this adventure. So a bit about myself?… I am from Rockland County New York, just like Leif. Ooo Piermont … a sweet place to grow up I think. I am currently in northern California, just 2 hours south of Oregon nestled in a tiny beach town next to the red wood forrest. Here, I work on veggie farms, study yoga and herbal medicine, and train as an aerial silk dancer (performer?.maybe one day)… I live a pretty simple life for the most part while i strive to learn the deeper meanings of life and happiness than what I had always been taught growing up. Ive come to find that traveling is one of the best ways for me to learn and grow as a person. I haven’t done too much exploring but the bit that I have done has been nothing sort of inspiring and deeply life altering. I’m looking forward to being immersed in a culture so different than what i am used to, to eat REAL Thai food!, to connect to Buddhist teachings more deeply, bask in the sun, and through it all have an extraordinary amount of fun. Tour Brief
Guatemala epitomizes the very best of Central America. It’s got quaint colonial cities, sky scraping volcanoes, enticing surf, tasty tacos, diverse cultures, and a brilliant undercurrent of that Latin rhythm and hospitality. It is my favorite country in the world and I’m excited to explore it with you.
On this tour you’ll learn how to surf and even how to salsa if you’re interested. You’ll eat lots of fresh fruits and a whole bunch of tacos. You’ll climb a monster volcano and hang from the back of pick up trucks (optional). And since nothing on this tour is rushed, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the view.
Like all Runaway Tours, this tour is all about good times, comfort on a budget, an off the trail experience, and hanging out and traveling with a small group of like minded friends to be.
