Lake Atitlan Hideout is a private apartment nestled among pines and palms on the side of a mountain with epic and unobstructed views of the sunrise & sunset. It’s where perspective altering views meets pure living, deep sleeps and hammock relaxation. It’s a place to simply slow down, de-stress, discover the Maya, live incredibly cheap, and enjoy spring like weather everyday.
The Space
Lake Atitlan Hideout is a 2 room studio apartment. The indoor living space is around 40 m2/ 430sqf, and the outdoor porch and garden is around 5 m2/60sqf. The bedroom features a comfortable double bed, cable tv with 30+ english channels including HBO, NBC 4, ABC 7, History, TV5 Monde, RAI, DW and many more. Both the bedroom and kitchen/dinning room feature nearly floor to cieling windows with epic views of both the sunrise and sunset over the lake (even from bed!).
The kitchen/dinning room has a full size fridge, 4 burner stove, fresh water dispenser, and aside from an oven, everything needed to cook up whatever you want.
The bathroom contains a sink, toilet and shower. With regards to the toilet, the only issue/difficult thing to get used to is not throwing toilet paper in it. Like most developing countries, plumbing systems in Guatemala aren’t built to handle paper. Also, since the shower is electric it can be very fickle. It does get hot but generally has a slow stream.
Finally, there’s also a semi-enclosed porch area. It’s the perfect place for eating breakfast, getting inspired, relaxing in lawn chairs and/or being productive on your computer if that’s your thing.
Extras
The Hideout On Lake Atitlan features access to a dedicated beach on the lake, where you can take morning swims.
You also have access to an enormous mirador (a lookout). The first floor the mirador is partially enclosed while the second floor is open air and offers unobstructed views of the most beautiful sunset in the world.
Where Do I Live?
I live in 1 of 6 hideouts from October to February.
If you want to come down, I will do all that I can to make your stay as comfortable, relaxing and sublime as possible.
Why? Because this is my favorite place in the world and I’m stoked to have the opportunity to show others just how good life can be on the lake.
If you want to volunteer for a humanitarian organization helping Maya families, let me know. If you want to take Spanish lessons I can easily help set it up for you. If you want to go explore the lake together, let’s hop the next ferry boat.
I will help introduce you to Lake Atitlan, the Maya people, a bunch of eccentric and interesting expat friends, and everything you need to know to enjoy a short term stay or begin a long-term relocation.
The Neighborhood
Lake Atitlan Hideout is situated within a private and secure apartment complex with a night manager/guard. Although guests come and go, there are a few long term renters who are all extreamly friendly, eager to help with anything, health concious and generally of a joyful disposition, no doubt fueled by the mind blowing view.
Getting Around
Lake Atitlan Hideout is located just 15/20 minutes walking from Lake Atitlan’s most convenient, delicious, and expat friendly town Panajachel (Pana for short). But if you don’t feel like walking, you can either call a Tuk Tuk (10Q / 1.30$) or hail a pickup truck-collectivo like a local Maya for just 2Q / 25 cents. The hideout is far enough from the noise and pollution of town but close enough to easily run in for groceries or a last minute bottle of wine.
More
Whether you’re trying to detox or simply want to get healthy, my nutritionist neighbors offer everything from personalized food to training and even professional consoling (specifically for those suffering from addiction) for an incredible value. Let me know if you’re interested.
So How Much Does It Cost?
The manager/owner of this place has been raising prices every year. They’ve also made the daily and weekly rate a little unreasonable. If you’re going to stay, the best value is definitely by the month.
- 39$/night (2 people +0)
- 229$/week (2 people +25$)
- 599/month (2 People +50$)
There are only 4 hideouts available and they’re going quick, so be sure to get in touch sooner than later.
